Puppy Chow Marshmallow Treats

Uncategorized

Sticky, gooey, and chocolatey, these Puppy Chow Marshmallow Treats take two classic sweet snacks and combine them for one ultimate, hard-to-resist bite. This recipe couldn’t be any easier. The Puppy Chow, or Muddy Buddies, recipe comes straight from the box of Chex cereal. After that, it’s just a matter of melting down some butter and marshmallows before adding the peanut butter and chocolate cereal pieces into it. It’ll be hard to resist digging in before completely cooled.

If there’s any treat that I just have zero will power around, it’s Puppy Chow (or Muddy Buddies as I knew it growing up). I basically inhale it, the pieces gone before I even realized I ate them. Of course, like with these Puppy Chow Cookies or Elvis Puppy Chow, I needed to find another way to use the treat. Tossing them in a load of melted marshmallow felt like the clear decision.

These treats are way too easy to put together. A mash-up between Puppy Chow and Rice Krispie Treats (another hard-to-resist treat, especially when homemade), these are gooey, with a stringy pull of marshmallow in each bite, sweet, and delicious. There’s no oven needed, just a microwave and a stovetop.

For the most part, everything just gets thrown together–the chocolate coated cereal gets tossed into a bag and shaken before being thrown into a pot of marshmallow and eventually spread into the baking dish.

You’ll be done before you know it. Just try to resist picking at the Puppy Chow before you start on the marshmallows (I struggled).

Instructions
  1. Make the Puppy Chow: Measure 9 cups of Chex cereal into a large bowl; set aside. In a medium bowl, microwave the 4 Tbsp butter, chocolate chips, and peanut butter on high in 30 second intervals, stirring after each, until fully melted. Stir in the vanilla extract. Pour the chocolate and peanut butter over the Chex cereal and gently mix until evenly coated. Transfer to a gallon-sized plastic bag. Add the powdered sugar. Seal the bag and shake until fully covered. Lay down a piece of wax or parchment paper and pour out the covered cereal. Let cool before moving on.
  2. Puppy Chow Marshmallow Treats: Line a 9" x 13" baking dish with parchment paper. Set aside. In a large pot, melt together the 6 Tbsp of butter and the 16 oz of marshmallows, stirring occasionally; it'll take a while before all of the marshmallows have completely melted. Add in the cooled puppy chow and the mini marshmallows, holding back a small handful of each. Stir until fully coated in melted marshmallow mix. Pour into the prepared pan and use a rubber spatula to spread the mix out evenly. Quickly drop the remaining marshmallows and puppy chow over the top. Leave for a couple of hours to set before slicing. Store extras in an airtight container.
